Private security firm Blackwater Worldwide began holding meetings in London on Tuesday with potential clients for a new business venture -- protection from pirates.

The Moyock, N.C., firm, which has grown rapidly through State Department security work in Iraq, has been courting shippers and insurance firms about protecting ships in pirate-infested waters. It's meeting with more than a dozen firms this week and hopes to drum up its first contract.

The McArthur can carry helicopters and inflatable boats.
There have been almost 100 attempts this year to seize ships off East Africa, fewer than half of which were successful, according to the U.S. Navy. On Nov. 30, two skiffs harassed an Oceania Cruises Inc. ship passing through the Gulf of Aden. Eight shots were fired at the cruise liner, which evaded the boats, according to the Miami-based company.

A chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden was seized by pirates last week, and earlier in November pirates grabbed a Saudi tanker loaded with $100 million of oil, which is still being held.

Navies from the U.S., India, Russia and Europe, including the British navy, have stepped up their patrols off the coasts of Somalia and Kenya and in the Gulf of Aden, but don't have the resources to protect all of the vessels that ply those waters. On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution supporting a European Union naval mission to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia.

The U.S. Navy is warning that ships need to be ready to fend for themselves in an area four times the size of Texas. "We've made a lot of recommendations that range from keeping ladders up on the ships' sides to putting professional security teams on board," said a Navy official.

The pirates, often armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, have lured ships with false distress calls and even attempted assaults with fast-moving boats, according to reports from the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre on recent attacks.

Blackwater already has a ship it says could be deployed abroad to scare off or even challenge pirates: the 183-foot McArthur, which the company bought in 2006. It can carry two helicopters as well as rigid-hull inflatable boats favored by naval commandoes, and 30 guards in addition to a crew of 15. Blackwater's database of contractors includes former Navy SEALs and Coast Guard personnel.

"Its primary goal would be one of deterrence, that's the idea here," said Blackwater spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell. The company would prefer to keep its guards aboard its own ship because of legal uncertainties. "We would be allowed to fire if fired upon; the right of self-defense is one that exists in international waters," she said.

Blackwater's push to land its first antipiracy contract is part of a strategy to build its business outside its State Department security work in Iraq, which brings in between $300 million and $400 million a year. There are growing concerns in the security industry that costs and legal risks in Iraq could skyrocket because, under a new agreement, foreign contractors there are set to lose their immunity from local law next year.

Shippers are wary of hiring combat-ready contractors to defend their oil tankers or cargo vessels because of liability issues and because pirates may be tempted to shoot first if they see armed guards. Kristi Clemens, president of security firm Aegis LLC, says it could even end up raising insurance rates.

Armed Italian cruise ship fends off Somalian pirates

Last Updated: Monday, April 27, 2009

An Italian cruise ship came under attack by Somalian pirates on Saturday, but its security forces were able to prevent them from clambering aboard, the company's director said Sunday.

A small white skiff approached the Melody cruise ship after dinnertime as it sailed north of the Seychelles, off Africa's east coast. The pirates fired wildly toward the 1,500 passengers and crew on board, but the MSC Cruises ocean liner's private Israeli security forces fired back.

Adding a new twist to the increasing scourge of Somalian pirate hijackings, the security guards aboard also sprayed water hoses at the pirates to prevent them from clambering aboard, company director Domenico Pellegrino said.

"It was an emergency operation," Pellegrino said. "They didn't expect such a quick response. They were surprised."

Passengers were ordered to return to their cabins and the lights on deck were switched off. The massive vessel then sailed on in darkness, eventually escorted by a Spanish warship to make sure it made it to its next port.

"It felt like we were in war," the ship's Italian commander, Ciro Pinto, told Italian state radio.

None of the 1,000 passengers were hurt and by Sunday afternoon they were back out on deck sunning themselves, Pellegrino said.

Armed ships

But analysts said the unprecedented use of weapons by the ship's security force could make things worse in the pirate-infested waters off the Horn of Africa, where more than 100 ships were attacked last year by pirates based in Somalia. In nearly all the successful hijackings, the crews were unharmed and were let go after a ransom was paid.

"There is a consensus in the shipping industry that, in the vast majority of cases, having an armed guard is not a good idea. The No. 1 reason is that it could cause an escalation of violence and pirates that have so far been trying to scare ships could now start to kill people," said Roger Middleton, an expert on Somalian piracy at London-based think tank Chatham House.

Other experts disagree, saying piracy off the coast of modern-day Somalia is unique in that the pirates are most interested in human cargo.

"Their business model, if you will, has been to not cross a line which would bring the whole weight of the world upon them. They want to seize hostages and ransom those hostages. So the likelihood that they would escalate violence is unlikely," said Africa expert Peter Pham, director of the Nelson Institute for International and Public Affairs at James Madison University in Virginia.

He argued that arming ships is not a sustainable solution, given that an estimated 20,000 vessels pass through the Gulf of Aden each year.

"For the Melody, you're talking about 1,000 passengers and 500 crew members, so maybe for 1,500 people paying to have security on board makes both economical and tactical sense — but when you're dealing with ordinary cargo ships it's very different," he said.

Pellegrino said MSC Cruises has Israeli private security forces on all their ships because they are the best. He said the pistols on board were at the discretion of the commander and the security forces.

The attack occurred near the Seychelles and about 800 kilometres east of Somalia, according to the anti-piracy flotilla headquarters of the European Union's Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa. The Melody was travelling up Africa's east coast, from Durban, South Africa, to Genoa, Italy.

Pinto said the pirates fired "like crazy" with automatic weapons, slightly damaging the liner, when they approached in a small, white, Zodiac-like boat.

"After about four or five minutes, they tried to put a ladder up," Pinto told the TV station Sky TG24.

"They were starting to climb up but we reacted, we started to fire ourselves. When they saw our fire, and also the water from the water hoses that we started to spray toward the Zodiac, they left and went away.... They followed us for a bit, about 20 minutes," he said.

Other clashes at sea

In a separate incident Sunday, Yemen's Interior Ministry said the Yemeni coast guard clashed with pirates and killed two of them when they tried to hijack a Yemeni tanker in the Gulf of Aden. And the Turkish cruiser Ariva 3, with two British and four Japanese crew members aboard, survived a pirate attack near the Yemeni island of Jabal Zuqar, said Ali el-Awlaqi, head of the Yemeni El-laqi Marine Co.

Earlier this month, the U.S. navy shot and killed three pirates and took a fourth into custody after a five-day standoff in the waters off Somalia, where they had hijacked the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama.

Saturday's exchange of fire between the Melody and pirates was one of the first reported between pirates and a nonmilitary ship. Civilian shipping and passenger ships have generally avoided arming crewmen or hiring armed security for reasons of safety, liability and compliance with the rules of the different countries where they dock.

It was not the first attack on a cruise liner, however. In November, pirates opened fire on a U.S.-operated ship, the M/S Nautica, which was taking 650 passengers and 400 crew members on a month-long luxury cruise from Rome to Singapore. The liner was able to outrun the pirates. And in early April a tourist yacht was hijacked by Somali pirates near the Seychelles just after having dropped off its cargo of tourists.

Job Title:  Cruise Ship Security Staff
Salary: SEE JOB DESCRIPTION
Type: Permanent
Company: International Cruise Services
Sectors: Cruise Ships Jobs
Travel Jobs, Leisure & Tourism Jobs
Job Location:  UK Wide
Job Description:  Security Staff Positions On Board Ships

The cruise industry's highest priority is to ensure the safety and security of its passengers, crew and vessels.
A cruise ship is inherently secure because it is a controlled environment with limited access. In order to maintain this secure environment, cruise lines have established strict ship security procedures that are, in part, outlined in internationally agreed-upon measures set forth by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The IMO, the United Nations body that establishes international maritime safety standards, has taken initiatives to address port and shipboard security. Most recently, worldwide security regulations known as the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code were implemented as amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Prior to these international regulations, CLIA cruise line members had U.S. Coast Guard-approved security plans in place since 1996, in which many of the future requirements of the ISPS Code and MTSA were already included. These plans allowed cruise ships to implement their highest level of security within hours of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Heightened security measures are standard for cruise ships today and include passenger screening procedures similar to those found at U.S. airports including the use of metal detectors. Security procedures include the 100 percent inspection of all passengers, their carry-on baggage and luggage. Each crewmember holds a U.S. seafarers visa and has thus undergone a U.S. State Department background check prior to visa issuance. In addition, all crewmembers and guests are placed on an official manifest and may embark and disembark only after passing through a security checkpoint. Once a ship is underway, only documented employees and fare-paying passengers are on board. Cruise lines employ security experts and advisors and train onboard personnel in security procedures. Many additional security techniques are routinely utilized by both port and cruise line security but remain invisible to the passengers' eye.
The cruise industry works closely with federal, state, and local agencies. They have a security committee that is comprised of corporate security officers from each cruise line, many of which have military or law enforcement backgrounds. Their aim is prevention and detection of crime and maintain law and order on board the ship. Ensure that the Company's rules and regulations are not breached by passengers or crew. Act as prosecutor at the Captains Court and be able to advise on ports of law/procedure. Security measures when docked and be aware of the correct protocol and procedure in relation to local customs and immigration regulations. Advise the Captain as to The International Maritime Organisation's Guidelines to prevent illegal acts at sea. Investigation of minor and serious crime.

Must have experience in the field of drug use, and know the signs and symptoms and effects of any particular type of drug. Advise the Captain of any intelligence reports received as to threat assessments in any particular port or location. Assessment of vulnerability either by crew or passengers and formulate drug search patterns and procedures and provide training for such drills.

Be mindful of the implications an act of terrorism would have on the ship. Therefore the Security Officer should have experience in bomb search techniques and provide training by means of regular drills on board the vessel. The Security Officer also mans the "Forward Command Post" and co-ordinated search methods and patterns and reports to the Captain as to progress. All ships are briefed as to levels of security to be implemented and intelligence bulletins are received daily .

They must be able to act rationally in demanding situations, i.e., should there be a fire or other similar threat on board the ship. Prevent stowaways from boarding the ship and have an idea of International Migration Law and handling procedures of stowaways caught. Ensure the hull of the ship (referred to as "The Shell") is watertight and that all hatches are properly battened down. Investigate in conjunction with the ships doctor all accidents to ensure false claims are not made against the ship.

Salaries range for Senior Security from £2500 - £4000 per month depending on age and experience
For Assistant Security Officers salaries range from £1600 - £2200 per month

PLEASE NOTE:- This is the job description of a Chief of Security Officer on board ship. There are many positions available for Assistant Security Officers. You must have had previous experience in the security field at a high level.

*************************************************************************

However ...
Na stranici http://www.cruiselinesjobs.com/eng/international-cruise-services/ objasnjavaju:

International Cruise Services - Is it a scam?
We have recieved a number of emails from jobseekers who reported International Cruise Services (based in Glasgow, UK) as another cruise ship employment scam to us.

We approached them in February 2009 and here is their response:

...

We charge a one off fee of 35 GBP for the cruise ship career guide and also newsletters containing all the current ships, changes of addresses of companies and general information about where to obtain vacancies. Which is sent to people who register free of charge for two years. We have been in business since l989 and have been approved by the Department of Trade and Industry who have been in our offices and are perfectly happy with way we operate.

At no time do we say in any of our literature that they pay to get a job. If you look at our web site - click on International Cruise Services button you will see that we clearly explain our services.

...

After a brief investigation we came to the following conclusions:

International Cruise Services is not what we would class as employment scam. However, their website (www.cruiseservices.co.uk) is misleading since they don't make it clear that they do not recruit staff but sell information packs and email newsletters.

International Cruise Services advertise a lot of jobs on various online job boards. However, they don't recruit staff for cruise lines and therefore these positions don't exist. It is illegal in the United Kingdom to advertise non-existing jobs.

We think some jobseekers might find their services useful. Having said that, most information that International Cruise Services sell for 35 GBP (approximatelly 50 USD) can be found elsewhere on the Internet for free.

Our Advice
Avoid International Cruise Services. Learn about cruise ship jobs on websites such as this one and apply for jobs with approved recruiters or directly employers.

You can find current jobs in cruise line industry on several job boards, such as Jobs4cruise.com.

    • Jeste li bili zadovoljni zaradom?

    • Kako biste opisali putnike?

    Imala sam i previše vremena.

    • Jeste li imali neko omiljeno mjesto za izlazak?
Nisam pravila pitanje mesta jer sam oko sebe imala dobro društvo i svuda mi je bilo lepo.

    • Opišite dobre strane rada na kruzerima.
    Putovanja, poznanstva, jezici.....

( oni pametni ce u ovoj recenici  prepoznati sarkazam )

Život na Moru ~ Life@Sea / In Port Manning
    « on: 03/May/2009 »

Nudi prijavu i dobru plaću.
Ivan Franolić želi proširiti posao za još 30 ljudi

    - Radim ovdje deset godina. Zadovoljna sam uvjetima i plaćom. Putujem iz Rijeke - rekla je Đuja Dabić (56).
