JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Junior Assistant Purser

Department: Purser
Position Reports to: Senior Assistant Purser – Front Desk Manager
Date Revised: March 12, 2003

Position Summary:

The position of Junior Assistant Purser covers the following areas: Front Desk, Crew Office, Excursion Desk. The duties assigned to Junior Assistant Pursers within the above areas are listed below. Other duties such as Hotel Secretary and Art Track may also be assigned to Junior Assistant Pursers during the course of a contract.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities – Front Desk
1. Answer all passenger inquiries/requests in a professional manner.
2. Assist in solving passenger complaints or problems and follow up with passengers as required.
3. Access computer system to either post charges or payments to passenger accounts. Provide account information to passengers as required. Ensure all accounts are paid before disembarkation.
4. Buy/sell foreign currencies and stamps. Cash personal or travelers’ checks as required.
5. Balance personal float at the end of each day. Ensure an accurate pay-in of all monies received.
6. Assist with passenger cabin change requests.
7. Assist in the preparation of passenger documentation.
8. Carry out all safety-related duties as assigned.
9. Other duties as assigned by Senior Officers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities – Assistant Crew Purser
1. Assist in preparing Crew immigration and customs documentation.
2. Assist in all embarkation and disembarkation duties.
3. Prepare Crew rotation communications to shore-side offices.
4. Update personnel/crew files in onboard computer system.
5. Assist in all Crew payroll functions and overtime reports.
6. Accept Crew safety deposit envelopes. Maintain receipt book.
7. Assist in balancing the Crew office float, maintain daily balance sheet and ensure accurate pay-in of funds received.
8. Ensure Crew office opens as required for access to all Crew, cash Crew checks, provide stamps, etc. as required.
9. Carry out all safety-related duties as assigned.
10. Other duties as assigned by Senior Officers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities – Assistant Shore Excursion Manager
1. Assist in operating the “Adventures Ashore” Shore Excursions and Port Information Program.
2. Assist in all Shore Excursion sales, providing passenger information as required. Operate the automated ticketing system.
3. Assist in maintaining accurate information in the computer database system regarding number of sales, revenue achieved, etc.
4. Assist in preparing and distributing printed information including tour order forms and port guides.
5. Assist in liaising with Tour Operators, advising them in advance of sales figures.
6. Assist in the dispatching and escorting of Shore Excursions.
7. Develop a working knowledge of the ports, including excursions, independent activities, places of interest, history and culture.
8. Assist in preparing reports on the quality of Shore Excursions and service provided by shore-side tour operators.
9. Assist and follow-up with problems as reported by passengers.
10.Carry out all safety-related duties as assigned.
11. Other duties as assigned by Senior Officers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities – Assistant Night Manager
1. Print passenger folios/account statements as required and ensure all folios are delivered to passenger staterooms.
2. Assist in the inputting of passenger charges that have not been processed at the point of sale into
the computer system
3. Assist in the collection and reconciliation of cash and charge checks form the ship’s revenue outlets.
4. Assist in closing ship’s bars at the end of the business day and inputting bar stocktake figures into the
computer inventory system.
5. Assist in overseeing the work duties of the night service/cleaning staff.
6. Assist in closing up the Casino area at the end of the business day.
7. Ensure all required keys are collected and secured in a safe area.
8. Assist the Night Manager as required in the efficient running of the hotel operation at night and
handling passenger questions and problems that arise.
9. Carry out all safety related duties as assigned.
10. Other duties as assigned by a Senior Officer.

Contract-Terms of Employment

CURRENT RATE OF PAY: (subject to change)
1st contract – USD $1,250 per month
2nd contract – USD $1,350 per month
3rd contract – USD $1,450 per month
4th contract – USD $1,550 per month

TAX DEDUCTIONS:
No deductions for taxes will be made, with the exception of U.S. staff for whom Federal Taxes will be deducted.

METHOD OF PAYMENT:
Cash onboard at the end of each month. Individuals are only paid while working onboard and are not paid while on leave.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT:
Contracts are approximately six months in length. Princess Cruises Lines, LTD, a Bermuda Company has the right to extend this period if no relief is immediately availableand to facilitate staff rotations.
The company has the right to transfer an individual to another ship mid-contract if required. Future contracts are advised prior to an individual disembarking at the end of the contract, two-month leave (vacation) is normally given between contracts.

WORKING HOURS:
The average working day is approximately eleven hours. All crewmembers work seven days a week (there are no days off). Onboard scheduling is determined by Senior Officers in the department.
Time off is granted at the Senior Officers’ discretion provided passenger service, operational and safety requirements permit.

ACCOMMODATION:
Junior Assistant Pursers share an Officers cabin usually with someone of the same rank. Each Junior Assistant Purser cabin has private facilities (i.e., shower, toilet). Storage space is limited.

UNIFORM:
One free supply of uniform is given upon hire. Replacements are at the cost of each individual.
Uniform is to be worn at all times in passenger areas, even if off duty.

EVALUATIONS:
Performance appraisals are carried out at the end of a contract, (and if required during a contract at the discretion of the Supervisor).

JOINING VESSELS:
Normal air travel, overnight hotel accommodations and meals are paid for by the company.

LEAVING VESSELS:
Return airfare is paid by the Company at the end of a contract or if an individual must disembark the vessel on medical or compassionate grounds.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:
All employees must pass a medical examination to the required standards before joining a vessel. The cost of the medical is at the employees’ own expense.

BACKGROUND CHECK:
All new employees are required to provide a Police Background Check prior to joining a ship.

PASSPORT:
A passport, and where necessary, visas will be required at the employee’s own expense.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE:
The company expects the highest standard of personal appearance at all times.
1. Moustache, beards, and long side-burns are not acceptable.
2. Hair on men must be clear of the collar.
3. Earrings and studs may not be worn by males. Females only to wear a maximum of one in each ear.
4. Visible tattoos are unacceptable.

PERSONAL REQUESTS:
The company will schedule staff as operationally required on its fleet of vessels and cannot take into account personal requests (i.e., personal relationships, itinerary preference).

LIFE ONBOARD:
Onboard, life is very military like with strict rules and regulations that must be followed.
As Officers, Junior Assistant Pursers are given certain privileges with access to passenger facilities.
Employees of many nationalities must live together onboard in a confined space. It is important each employee is understanding of other cultures. The complete terms of employment will be provided by Princess Cruises at the time of hire. Life onboard is governed by a code of conduct, a copy of which is also provided upon employment.

Specifications – The knowledge, skills and abilities required or preferred for this position.
Education-College degree is preferred

Experience
Must have a complete command of the English Language. Ability to speak English effectively before groups of guests, subordinates, peers and supervisors. Proven history of strong management, organization and follow-through skills. A minimum of two years of experience in the hotel/hospitality industry in a junior management capacity is required. Experience working as a front desk attendant is also desirable.

Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to be pro-active within department.
Ability to work under stress and pressure.

Sve ima svoje prednosti i mane. P&O AUS i Princess je tesko porediti, nebo i zemlja. Sto se Pursera tice, imas malo vise para na P&O (mada, sada sa kursom AUS dolara, to i nije tako strasna razlika), al zato ces da ides u jednate iste 3 luke tokom cele karijere, promociju ces dobiti na sveto nikad (a mozda ni tad) i radices na matorim brodovima sa timom koji postaje sve gori i gori....
