3rd Ventilation officer

cruise ship jobs
Cruise ships have extensive ventilation system

Question: Re:Ventilation officer
Here’s some news for beginners like me that do not have working experience on board.
I had an interview with the Princes Cruises company. They have conducted interviews in Kotor at Maritime College …… last month.
I accidentally found out the day before the test …. ie. interview.
I gathered my papers and went over there.

When I got there, I introduced myself and told them why I was there. I told them that I didn’t have any work experience onboard, no certificates or Seaman’s book.

Two nice girls told me they were not there to answer questions or to receive my CV, but if I wanted to stay for the presentation, I could attend the interview afterwards. They told me that I could probably apply for the position of 3rd Ventilation officer. They also told me that all certification for the job could be acquired in a short amount of time.
Apparently they were interested in workers like me, young and with no experience onboard.
I agreed to stay …. it didn’t cost me anything. 😉
I did everything they said.
I’ve done a short test. After testing at the simulator there was on-site interview of approximately 20-25 minutes.
Everything was in English.
I was told that I would be contacted in a few days by their chief engineer from Los Angeles.
And that’s how it was. A man called me and we talked for half an hour.

A few days later a call came from a girl who was on the interview and she asked me if I was willing to come to England for five days in order to obtain basic certificates ….. four basic courses.
They sent me a letter of invitation for this trainings. Trainings are from 24 to 28 November. All costs of travel and trainings are paid by the company. That’s what told me.
Now I have applied for a British visa.
It seems that it would take a while.

I’m interested in what you experiences sailors think about it, does this sound right?
Is this the first step towards ensuring that I get the job ???
I think it wouldn’t be logical to pay for it all if they don’t plan to employ me.
What do you think about all this ???

Is there any of you who have worked in such position on this or another company?

Answer:
3rd Ventilation officer is an excellent starting position. At Princess Cruises, you could be progressing fast in that department.
If they pay you for the cost of trainings, that’s great. I worked for Princess, they regularly send people in Warsash, on a one-week training at the expense of the company.
For some positions, like Security Officer for example, they are known to organize trainings even before they came on board.
